Nic VS The Food Slicer

Nic decided to wake up early and challenge The Pampered Chef Food Slicer we keep in our top drawer. His blade of choice, the juilian slicer. (You know, the one with the perpendicular blades to cut shoestring potatoes.) In goes the tip of the middle finger, scooping out a chunck of his finger nail and nail bed. (Nic:0 Food Slicer:1) Nic decided that hurt so he pulled his hand back and in went the perpendicular blade deep into the nail bed. Double ouch! (Nic:0 Food Slicer:2)

Ken and I awoke early this morning to the lovely voice of my oldest daugher yelling, "Nic is hurt and he is bleeding all over the place." We scrambled out of bed, quickly got dressed and ran down the stairs to see Nic standing on a stool in the kitchen. Sure enough, there was blood pooled up on the countertop and Nic crying, in pain, bleeding from one of his hands. (There was a lot of blood. I couldn't tell which hand was injured.) I scooped him up and laied him on his back on the kitchen floor. I wiped some of the blood off and saw the small but gushing puncture wound was on his left middle finger. My Hubby got me papertowels and the first aid kit and we put pressure on the cut. Three papertowels later, we decided to hop in the car and take a trip to the Emergency Clinic. I had looked at the wound, and knew that they couldn't do much for him other than bandage it. But still when the Clinic sent us to the Hospital, because they might want to put him under anestesia, I just accepted it and followed their instructions. Of course once we were there, about 40 minutes later, the wound was starting to heal on its own. It was obvious that a bandage was the only solution. The ER nurse cleaned it up really good and it started to gush blood again. (The thing bled for 2 hours before we got a more permanent bandage on it.) The first nurse tried a simple bandaid, but it was bleeding too much for that. So they sent in another nurse who wrapped it up really good. Gauze and bandage tape around the finger and down around the palm and wrist.

He was thrilled when we got up to leave. "Yea!" he said enthusiastically. Afterwards we took the kids out for some milkshakes and then we came home to watch some cartoons and take a nap. What an exciting morning.
